Dr. Pistone uses Xeomin in Marlton NJ, to prevent the formation of dynamic wrinkles that are caused by the contractions of the delicate underlying facial muscles every time you smile, laugh or frown. These are lines that can give a person an angry, tired or sad appearance.

Xeomin is incobotulinumtoxinA.

Like Botox, Xeomin, incobotulinumtoxinA is made from the bacteria that causes botulism.  They both work by blocking nerve activity in the muscles that cause wrinkles to form, causing a temporary reduction in muscle activity and reducing the formation of wrinkles.

Is Xeomin different than Botox and Dysport?

Unlike Botox, Xeomin is does not need to be refrigerated before use, which will make it easier for doctors to store it.  Unlike Botox, Xeomin has no additives to develop antibodies in response to a foreign substance. This may be why some patients find their Botox results lasting for shorter periods. Xeomin works faster than Botox but lasts about the same amount of time as Botox.

Are the risks with Xeomin?

There is always a risk with the injection that the botulinum toxin may spread from the treatment site to other parts of the body.  Other risks may include bleeding and bruising at the injection site and allergic reactions such as itching, swelling or shortness of breath.

Are there any side effects with Xeomin?

Temporary bruising is the most common side effect. In some cases the drug can migrate and cause a temporary weakness of nearby muscles. In rare cases, there can be a drooping of an eyelid or asymmetry of facial expression. The risk of any side effect depends on the muscles injected. Our physician will discuss this with you at length before your treatment. Because the effects of Xeomin are completely reversible, any side effects are temporary, lasting only a few weeks.

What results can I expect?

If dynamic wrinkles make you look older than you are, Xeomin can smooth these out and give you a more youthful and pleasant appearance. However, this procedure can not improve wrinkles due to aging and sun-damaged skin since they are unrelated to facial muscle contractions. Xeomin injections will not improve sagging skin or replace the need for a facelift or brow lift.

Are there limitations of Xeomin injections?

Unfortunately, Xeomin injections are a temporary solution for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles. The effects of the injections may last from four to six months. You will need to have injections a few times a year. Also, the duration of effect may vary from patient to patient.
